Week One: Affordable Housing for Single Mothers {Unlimited Hope, Unlimited Impact Series}

For many single mothers, securing affordable housing is not just a challenge—it’s an insurmountable barrier that leaves families vulnerable and without options. Stable housing provides the foundation for a family’s future, yet too many in our community are trapped in a cycle of housing insecurity. Thrive SWFL is committed to changing this reality by offering more than just shelter—we provide a pathway to lasting stability and hope.

Maria’s Story

When Maria and her toddler arrived at Thrive SWFL, they had spent months living in her car. Nights were cold and lonely, and the uncertainty of their future weighed heavily on her heart. Maria had no family to turn to, and the cost of housing seemed impossibly out of reach. She felt hopeless. But when Maria found Thrive, everything changed.

Through our housing program, Maria was provided with a safe, stable place to call home. She was also connected to counseling, parenting support, and career development services. Slowly but surely, she began to rebuild her life. Today, Maria is pursuing her career goals, and her toddler is thriving in a nurturing environment. Maria often shares that finding Thrive restored her faith in God’s provision and opened the door to a future filled with possibility.

Understanding the Crisis

Florida has one of the highest percentages of cost-burdened renters in the nation, with 56% of low-income families spending more than half their income on housing. For single mothers, this burden is even greater. Limited income, long waiting lists for affordable units, and a lack of family support often force these women to choose between paying rent and meeting other basic needs. As a result, many are left homeless or in unstable living conditions that put their children at risk.

Affordable housing is not just a financial issue; it’s a moral and spiritual one. Proverbs 31:8-9 calls us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.” At Thrive, we see housing as a cornerstone of dignity and opportunity. By addressing this need, we empower women to rebuild their lives and give their children a brighter future.

The Role of Community

The housing crisis cannot be solved alone. It requires the collective effort of individuals, organizations, and community leaders. Thrive SWFL works tirelessly to advocate for policies that increase access to affordable housing and to expand our own housing programs. But we need your help to make a greater impact.
